Of the South Pacific Islands, Tonga has the least appeal to nature lovers, other than those of marine environments. The main island of Tongatapu has been mostly stripped of its native forests for family and commercial plantations. Consequently, there are a few native birds existing but those that can be seen include lorikeets and the koki parrot, as well as the endemic malau which incubates its eggs on the warm volcanic slopes of Niuafo'ou Island in the Ha'apai Group. For those who like nature and are visiting Tonga, head to 'Eua Island south of Tongatapu where native forest can be found along with nice hiking trails.

Tongan Villages are traditional in social make-up but not so in ascetics. Most houses are made of cement blocks with tin roofing iron but there are also quite a few large double storey houses made of fine brick and tiles. However, the largest and most elaborate buildings in any village is the Church, of which there are often more than one for each denomination. A typical village sight is seeing pigs wander around at will, and being chased out of houses. Whilst you are free to walk around villages there are no official village homestay programs in Tonga. The most picturesque villages are found on the islands of the Ha'apai Group.
